Ever wondered why people paint the ceiling of a porch light blue? I used to think it was to mimic the sky color but recently an old Cape Codder told me it was to keep witches at bay. Since I love a good story, I decided to look into it. Turns out painting parts of your home light blue has its origins over 200 years ago in the southern United States. Gullah Geechee folklore says that evil spirits or “haints” could not cross water and thus a light blue color was a deterrent.

I have also heard the this color keeps bugs (especially spiders) away. I know there are bug repellent additives you mix in with paint which will do the same thing.
Now that the ceiling of my retail store The Weather Store & Paul Madden Antiques has a blue porch ceiling , I’m feeling especially protected against witches and bugs!
